Robert Noyce
“Optimism is an essential ingredient of innovation,” Robert Noyce
What did Robert Noyce invent?
Robert Noyce invented the integrated chip which paved the way for the microprocessors used in modern computers. He was a computer industry pioneer and was given the nickname ‘Mayor of Silicon Valley’.
Along with Jack Kilby, Noyce created the integrated circuit which led to further digital developments. The intergrated circuit was integeral to creating objects such as the pocket calculator to onboard computers used by NASA to capture images of the moon.
What was Robert Noyce recognised for?
Noyce co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957 and Intel in 1968. These are two of the most influential computer companies in the computer industry. In 1971 Intel introduced the first microprocessor, which combined on a single silicon chip the circuitry for both information storage and information processing. Intel quickly became the leading producer of microprocessor chips.
In 1979 Robert Noyce was awarded the National Medal of Science as he held 16 patents.
Intel was responsible for creating the personal computer which revolutionised the 80’s and 90’s and led to the extensive use of microchips in consumer products. As Noyce wrote; “How else can the individual welcome change over security, adventure over staying in safe places?” Without Robert Noyces invention of the microchip we would not have had the essentail element for smartphones, videogames or even microwaves.
